Sometimes, right before Adam leaves for seminary, right after we have prayer together, I wrap my arms around Adam and hug him tight. And he hugs back. And I say, "I love you son". And he says, "you too". And then he walks out the door.
In all truth, the hug probably happens because the kid is so tired that he can hardly hold himself up, and it gives him a chance to rest on me for a few seconds. But I'll take it! Any other time of the day, if I try to touch him, Adam flinches away. Teenage son, or bipolar, I will probably never know. But I'll tell you what, I enjoy that rare hug.
